What Is North Carolina’s New Abortion Law?

NC’s latest abortion laws went into effect on July 1st, 2023. You can now legally get an abortion in North Carolina up to 12 weeks, 6 days of pregnancy. The previous ruling extended to 20 weeks. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to have consent from a parent or guardian.

There are some exceptions to this ruling.

No limit is set when there is a threat to the life of the mother. If the pregnancy involves rape or incest, abortion is legal for up to 20 weeks. And in cases where a life-limiting anomaly is found in the baby, abortion is legal for up to 24 weeks.

  • All abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy must be completed in a hospital.
