The History of Pregnancy Support Services

A group of Christians in Chapel Hill . . .

Who were concerned about the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision in 1973 to legalize abortion gathered in 1981 to pray. As a result, a pregnancy care center, Pregnancy Support Services (PSS), opened its doors in Chapel Hill to offer practical, emotional and spiritual support to women facing the challenges of unplanned pregnancies. PSS incorporated in 1983 and opened a second office in 1986 in Durham. In 2014, these two locations were combined to provide a central location that now serves both communities.

Since that time, PSS has worked diligently to keep its community services relevant and accessible. Today, PSS provides resources and education for women facing unplanned pregnancies and healthy relationship presentations to thousands of students in local public and private schools, post-abortion support groups, and, in partnership with the Durham County Health Department, monthly STD testing.
